California Cricket Academy (CCA) are a coaching academy based in San Jose, California that boast of a hugely successful record, competing in many national tournaments and even travelling abroad to compete in tournaments. Over the past couple of years they have toured the UK playing in tournaments at Taunton and Oundle playing against some of the best county sides that we have to offer. For a country where cricket is very much in its infancy they have done themselves proud – improving on their results year on year. This record is not surprising when you see how much passion there is for cricket and then also how much time and effort Hemant puts in behind the scenes making sure the boys and girls receive some of the best coaching around. They regularly bring coaches over from India to offer their words of wisdom. This time it was our chance to impart our knowledge on them.
The sessions we delivered out there mimicked the courses that we run over school holidays back here in England- Batting & Bowling Master Classes along with an elite week. The first weekend we were there, we delivered the junior Master Class. Despite the weather trying to put a halt to proceedings (who would’ve thought that we would go all the way to California and still have to battle the elements!?) we managed to have 2 good days in a local indoor football centre. Although facilities weren’t ideal we were still able to go through a variety of batting and bowling drills to develop their game. This is where the natural talent from the group became apparent.
The elite week training course that we delivered was split into two groups- juniors in the morning with the seniors in the afternoon. During this week we had 15 hours with each group, meaning that we were able to cover a wide range of skills and were able to offer plenty of video analysis to each individual which made a massive difference. We included elements of fitness which was used to give them an indication of what is required to make it as a modern day professional cricketer. Towards the end of the week we started to put what we’d practising into play with a range of different scenario and consequence based nets.
Our final weekend was with the senior group once again, delivering Batting and Bowling Master Classes. With word of mouth getting around about how well the week was going, this group was at maximum capacity. Again, we went through a selection of drills and challenged the group as much as possible. We looked at playing at different stages of the innings with a big focus on end of innings skills, encouraging the players to learn through giving it a go and not being afraid of making mistakes.
We had a great nine days coaching and came across some very talented cricketers along the way. We wish every cricketer at CCA all the best with their future development and hope to see you all soon. Thank you to all those who made our trip positive and enjoyable- especially Rajib and Rishi who were kind enough to take us to an NBA game and show us around San Francisco on our evenings off and to Hemant who made this all happen. Finally a massive good luck to Mohak Buch (who attended the senior elite week) with his USA U19’s ventures, definitely a name to watch!
