On Tuesday 18th July we were extremely fortunate to host a special Guest Master Class with Australian international cricketer Peter Handscomb. For the lucky group of junior and senior players that attended it was a fun and informative evening, with plenty of advice and tips from Pete. The Yorkshire overseas kicked off the session talking us through his own personal cricketing journey;
“It all started hitting around at home with the old man… we had a long straight drive so I had to learn to play straight early on!”
The first half of the session was focused on the skills required for Test match batting and the second half focused on T20 & ODI skills. Before breaking away each time, the group watched and were talked through some of Pete’s fantastic performances including his 50 on test debut for Australia and his blistering 103* off 64 balls in the Big Bash. Getting the inside perspective from the man himself gives a whole new dimension to watching the innings’.
“In test cricket, before every ball I say to myself – straight and late”
Moving onto T20 skills; Pete did some fantastic power hitting demos for us, showing how easily he can score 360 of the wicket. The main objective of a T20 net is to have fun, setting yourself little challenges. With this in mind the cricketers played around the clock, trying to hit every ball to a different place on the clock face, which produced some innovative shots!
“In T20 I’m thinking – run a ball. Trying to hit the ball hard into the ground, it gets my feet going, it gets my hands going.”
Throughout the session there was a resounding theme – do what works for you, if it’s not in the textbook it’s still okay. Pete will be the first to admit his technique and quirks are not the most orthodox, but its what works for him and helps him to continue scoring runs.
Each cricketer had a lot of 1:1 time with Pete and they certainly made the most of it, picking the brains of an international cricketer with all those burning questions. To wrap up the session we had yet more questions in a Q&A and then pictures and autographs for all! A massive thank you from all at Pro Coach to Pete, it was a memorable session for everyone involved!
